Ants are mostly a nuisance rather than a danger, but a trail across the kitchen bench every morning wears thin fast. Some species also damage lawns and paving, invade electrical boxes, or deliver a nasty bite.
Common ants around Sydney homes
- Coastal brown ants. Small brown ants that push up little piles of sand between pavers and along slab edges, and forage inside in large numbers.
- Black house ants. Small, shiny black ants that trail along windows, benches and into sugar and pet food.
- Argentine ants. Small, light-brown invasive ants that form very large, connected colonies.
- Carpenter (sugar) ants. Large ants that nest in damp or decaying timber, wall cavities and trees. They don't eat wood the way termites do, but they can enlarge cavities in damp timber.
- Bull ants and jumper ants. Big, aggressive ants with painful stings, more common near bushland.
Important: red imported fire ants
Fire ants are an invasive pest that NSW is working to eradicate, and NSW DPI has reported a detection at Enfield in Sydney in September 2026. They're small, coppery-brown ants with a darker abdomen that build dome-shaped mounds of loose soil with no obvious entry hole, often in lawns and open areas. If you suspect fire ants, don't disturb or treat them yourself, and don't call a pest controller first. Take a photo if it's safe, and report them to the NSW Biosecurity Helpline on 1800 680 244 or through the NSW DPI website.
What ant treatment usually involves
- Identification of the species, because different ants take different baits and treatments.
- Finding the nest by following trails back to paving, walls, garden beds or trees.
- Non-repellent treatments or baits that worker ants carry back to the colony, so the nest is controlled, not just the ants you can see.
- Perimeter treatment around the outside of the home to stop new trails coming in.
When ants are worst in Sydney
Ant activity jumps as the weather warms up in spring and stays high through summer. You'll often see more ants inside just before and after rain, as they move to higher, drier ground or look for food.
What you can do today
- Wipe trails with soapy water or vinegar to remove the scent markers they follow.
- Keep sweet foods, honey, sugar and pet food sealed.
- Trim plants touching the house, as ants use them as bridges.
- Avoid spraying surface sprays on trails if you've got bait down, as it can scatter the colony.
Frequently asked questions
Why do ants keep coming back after I spray them?
Surface sprays kill the ants you can see, but the queen and nest survive, and some species split into new colonies when disturbed. Baits and non-repellent treatments that workers carry back to the nest usually give longer-lasting results.
Are carpenter ants the same as termites?
No. Carpenter ants nest in damp or decayed timber but don't eat it, while termites eat timber and can cause major structural damage. Large numbers of carpenter ants inside a wall can point to a moisture problem worth checking.
What should I do if I think I've found fire ants?
Don't disturb or treat them. NSW DPI asks you to take a photo if it's safe and report them straight away on 1800 680 244 or via the NSW DPI website.
