Most pest controllers do honest, careful work, but quality varies. Here's a quick checklist to help you pick a good one, whether you find them yourself or through us.
1. Check they're licensed
In NSW, people who carry out pest management work must hold a licence issued by the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA). Ask to see the technician's licence before work starts. It's a reasonable request and a good operator won't mind.
2. Ask about insurance
Ask whether the business holds public liability insurance and, for timber pest inspections, professional indemnity insurance.
3. Read recent reviews
Look for a strong rating built on plenty of genuine reviews, and read what people say about punctuality, communication and whether the problem came back. How a business responds to the occasional bad review tells you a lot too.
4. Get the quote in writing
A clear quote should say what will be treated, which areas (inside, outside, roof void, subfloor), what's not included, and whether follow-up visits are included. For termites, the quote should follow an inspection.
5. Ask about products and safety
- What products will be used, and where?
- How long should kids, pets and anyone with asthma stay out of treated areas?
- Do they cover fish tanks, veggie gardens and pet bowls?
- Are there lower-spray options like gel baits and bait stations?
6. Understand the warranty
Ask what the warranty covers, for how long, and what you need to do to keep it valid (for example, not spraying over baits, or booking annual inspections for termite systems).
7. Be wary of pressure
Be cautious of anyone who insists on a big, expensive treatment on the spot or won't explain why it's needed. A good technician will explain what they found and give you time to decide.
